On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats attacked the American intelligence ship, the USS Liberty, in international waters near the Sinai Peninsula.
The attack killed 34 Americans: including Navy sailors, Marines, and NSA personnel while wounding 174 others.
Israel later claimed the attack was a tragic case of mistaken identity, claiming the ship was confused for an Egyptian vessel.
The U.S. government officially accepted that explanation.
However many survivors, intelligence officials, and military officers argued the ship was clearly marked as American.
